What to expect during Kybella?
Kybella® is a non-surgical treatment that is completed in-office. There is no anesthesia required. An icepack will be applied while your Kybella® injection is being prepared. Your practitioner will administer Kybella® by injecting the Kybella® solution into the target area using a series of tiny injections. Kybella® is administered evenly around the treatment site to ensure symmetrical results.
After the procedure, you may experience some slight bruising, swelling, redness, or tenderness around the treatment area following Kybella®. These side effects should begin to subside within a few days. Patients can typically resume their daily routines immediately following their Kybella® injections.
How do I prepare for Kybella?
- Avoid aspirin, aspirin-containing medications, blood thinners, and gingko biloba or fish oil supplements for one week prior to your treatment.
- Additionally, steer clear of strenuous exercise, ibuprofen, aspirin, and alcohol for 24-48 hours before your appointment, as these may increase the likelihood of bruising.
- Ensure the treatment area is clean and free of lotions, oils, or makeup on the day of your procedure.
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning, or any activity that might irritate the skin in the treatment area before your session.
- While Kybella is non-surgical, you may experience some swelling, redness, or bruising post-treatment. It’s advisable to plan for a few days of downtime, particularly if you have any important events coming up.
- Notify clinic with any changes to your health history or medications since your last appointment.
What are the aftercare instructions following Kybella?
- Apply a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the treated area for 10-15 minutes every few hours during the first day to reduce swelling.
- Drink plenty of water to help flush out the fat cells eliminated during the process.
- Stay upright the first 4hrs to minimize the risk of swelling and bruising. Avoid lying down or bending over excessively during this time.
- Do not massage or apply pressure to the treated area unless instructed by your provider.
- Avoid strenuous exercise, massaging the treated area, ibuprofen, aspirin, or alcohol for 24-48 hours, as these may increase the risk of bruising.
- For mild soreness or tenderness, Tylenol is safe to take.
How often should I do Kybella?
The frequency of Kybella treatments depends on your individual goals and the amount of fat you have. Most patients need 2-4 treatments to achieve their desired results, spaced 4-6 weeks apart to allow your body time to process and eliminate the fat cells after each session. After your initial series of treatments, some patients may require touch-up treatments, depending on the amount of fat remaining and how much further reduction they desire.
Is Kybella painful?
Any discomfort experienced is typically mild and can be easily managed.
